This scan allows us to check how your baby is developing and in combination with a blood test allows us to check for any genetic concerns. This scan should be ideally performed between 12 weeks 5 days and 13 weeks 6 days of your pregnancy. As well as checking that your baby is growing well and confirming your due date the main aim of the scan includes:. On the day of your scan you can choose to have the results given to you by our resident radiologist or obstetrician or have the results delivered by your doctor or obstetrician at your follow-up appointment, please note: some specialist like their patients to return to them for the results.
Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like your results on the day. Ultrasound is safe to use throughout your pregnancy. Sometimes we need to do a vaginal scan. Occasionally there is some discomfort from probe pressure on a full bladder or from the vaginal probe manipulation.
The test suggests which pregnancies are at a higher risk of abnormality and may need further investigation. Alongside the scan we require you to have a blood test at least three working days prior. The pathology results and the scan measurements are used together to provide your report. We require you to have a full bladder during this scan.
Nuchal Translucency Scan – This is also offered to pregnant mums at the same time as the Dating Scan. This assesses the risk of Down Syndrome in babies.
Nuchal translucency is the name for the normal fluid space behind the neck of a foetus unborn baby that can be seen on ultrasound scans. A nuchal translucency scan also called first trimester of pregnancy screening is carried out during weeks 11—13 of a pregnancy. The scan uses ultrasound to screen for Down syndrome, or other chromosomal or inherited conditions in the foetus.
Other non-chromosomal conditions, such as neural tube defects, abdominal wall defects, limb abnormalities and some congenital heart disease, can also be detected at this stage of the pregnancy. Screening can determine the likelihood of risk of an abnormality, but does not diagnose the condition. If screening does identify a possible risk, it does not necessarily mean there is an abnormality present, but does mean that further testing is necessary.
Women who return a high-risk result from the screening will be offered formal genetic testing using other procedures, such as amniocentesis or chorion villus sampling CVS. All women are offered a nuchal translucency test regardless of their age, and 19 out of 20 women have a normal screening result. Any patient might be referred for a nuchal translucency test regardless of their age. Your referring doctor GP or obstetrician will be able to tell you whether you are eligible for a Medicare rebate for the scan.
There is very little preparation required. You should have some fluid in the bladder, but not be uncomfortably full.
How do I prepare?
The common first step will be a dating scan between weeks as we like to check your baby before 10 weeks. Before 7 weeks it may be too early to acquire this information. To obtain the best images possible, this scan is routinely performed internally and perfectly safe to perform during early pregnancy. At 7 weeks gestation a pregnancy sac should be seen within the uterus. Within this sac will be an embryo, heart motion and yolk sac should be visible.
Approaching 8 weeks, early brain formation is identified with a black space in the head called the rhombencephalon.
The first part is an additional measurement of your baby, taken at the dating scan. The sonographer will measure the nuchal translucency (NT) this is the fluid.
The scan may also show if you are expecting a baby girl or boy. The hospital will not offer you another scan if this is the case. The person performing the scan is called a sonographer. The sonographer will put gel onto your tummy to start the examination. The gel usually feels cold and you may feel a little discomfort when the ultrasound probe transducer presses on your tummy. An ultrasound scan takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
A screen will be visible for you to also see what the sonographer is looking at. It is advised you have a full bladder, when having a scan. This helps the ultrasound echoes to reach your womb, giving them a better view of your baby. The transducer sends high frequency sound waves in your abdomen to build a picture of the baby. These waves bounce off your baby and back to the computer to be translated into a picture.
Hard tissues, such as bone, reflect the most sound waves and make the biggest echoes. These appear white in the image, and soft tissues appear grey. Fluids, such as the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, appear black.

you are 14 weeks into your pregnancy (most women will have the blood test taken following their early dating scan alongside the nuchal fold measurement).
A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.
By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures. Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy.
